Children and adolescents had a higher risk of a new diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) after COVID-19 infection compared with other respiratory infections (ORIs), according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. This effect was more pronounced in patients who were overweight or obese.
This retrospective cohort study included 613,602 patients aged 10 to 19 years, between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2022. The researchers assessed rates of new diagnoses of T2D within 6 months of COVID-19 or ORI. Of the total population, 306,801 patients had a COVID-19 infection and 306,801 had ORIs. However, there was no documentation of COVID-19. Patients were propensity-score matched.
Compared to patients with ORIs, the risk of a new diagnosis of T2D after COVID-19 infection was significantly increased at 1 month (risk ratio [RR], 1.55; 95% CI, 1.28–1.89), 3 months (RR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.24–1.76), and 6 months (RR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.35–1.85). The risk was also elevated in the subset of patients who were overweight or obese (RR at 1 month, 2.07; RR at 3 months, 2.00; RR at 6 months, 2.27). Patients who were hospitalized for COVID showed a similar elevated risk at 1, 3, and 6 months (RR, 3.10, 2.74, and 2.62, respectively).
“In this cohort study, pediatric patients aged 10 to 19 years had increased risk for a new diagnosis of T2D following COVID-19 infection compared with children who had ORIs, and this was true for those who were hospitalized and for those classified as having overweight or obesity,” the authors summarized. They called for further research to elucidate the role of SARS-CoV-2 in pediatric T2D incidence and inform risk and benefit analysis.
