In part 2 of a series for Urban Health Today, Columbus Batiste II, MD, Interventional Cardiologist with Kaiser Permanente, shares a personal story about how implicit bias impacts health care for people of color. In this interview with Joel Kahn, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Batiste recounts an experience where his wife received insufficient care during a cardiovascular medical emergency, demonstrating the intersection of race and gender on health care outcomes. He also discusses what physicians can do to change this paradigm and improve how care is delivered to racial and gender minorities.
In part 1 of this interview, Dr. Batiste talks about his background growing up in Compton, CA, and the path that led him into interventional cardiology.
