In part one of a three-part series for Urban Health Today, Joel Kahn, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine, sat down with Kavitha Chinnaiyan, MD, FACC, MSCCT, to discuss her experiences of cardiology training in the US as a foreign medical graduate and a woman of color. Dr. Chinnaiyan, who is a cardiologist and a Professor of Medicine at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, talks about the challenges and successes of her cardiology training in the US and how it differed from her medical school training in India. She also calls for more awareness of the needs of foreign medical graduates and underrepresented minority students in medical and cardiology training programs in the US.
