The incidence of vaginal cancer is increasing globally, emphasizing the need for enhanced Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates to prevent the cancer development, according to a study published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.For this study, Dr. Junjie Huang, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and colleagues evaluated the incidence, risk factors, and trends for vaginal cancer worldwide. The data used were obtained from the Global Cancer Observatory. The Global Cancer Observatory database was used to determine the incidence of vaginal cancer in 2020 among 185 countries.The study revealed that there were 17908 newly reported cases of vaginal cancer worldwide. Among the subregions assessed, the cases were significantly higher in&nbsp; South&ndash;Central Asia and Southern and Eastern Africa.&nbsp;The researchers also found a significant variation in vaginal cancer incidence across different regions. According to Dr. Huang and the team, the disease is notably more common in certain parts of Africa and Asia compared to other areas, affecting both young and older women.The most significant rise in the global incidence of vaginal cancer globally was seen in&nbsp; Iceland, Chile, Bahrain and the UK. Interestingly, countries reported that countries like Martinique, Uganda, and Austria had experienced a significant decline in the incidence of vaginal cancer.Countries with the highest rates of vaginal cancer included Malawi, Namibia, and Angola. Countries with the lowest rates included Tajikistan, Paraguay, and Saudi Arabia.Furthermore, people in countries with medium levels of development had the highest rates of vaginal cancer, followed by countries with low development levels. Countries with high or very high development levels had lower rates.Dr. Huang and colleagues identified that factors like unsafe sex and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection were associated with higher rates of vaginal cancer.&ldquo;The increasing incidence trend emphasizes the need for enhanced human papillomavirus vaccination rates to prevent the development of vaginal cancer,&rdquo; the authors write. &ldquo;Education should be provided to individuals in high-risk regions about the dangers of unsafe sex and the importance of human papillomavirus vaccination.&rdquo;Source: <a href="https://www.healthday.com/healthpro-news/cancer/vaginal-cancer-incidence-increasing-globally">HealthDay</a>
