Understanding the priorities of Black patients with prostate cancer may help address disparities among this population compared with other groups and types of cancer, according to a study presented by Dr. Maheetha Bharadwaj and colleagues at the 25th Annual Meeting of the Society of Urologic Oncology.
Dr. Bharadwaj shared the findings of an adapted survey sent to over 2,000 patients and caregivers across the United States through the Black and African-descent Collaborative for Prostate Cancer Action Virtual Research Community. The analysis was then assessed by the University of Washington Institutional Review Board.
Surveys were distributed during May 2024 and focused on priorities in three research domains: localized, recurrent, and advanced prostate cancer. All patients were Black, however, non-Black caregivers of Black patients were allowed to participate in the survey. Questions highlighted areas such as genomics, surgery, treatment, lifestyle, and caregiver burden. More than 1,200 people responded to the survey (patients n=749, caregivers n=484), and 22 participants were both a patient and caregiver.
For localized cancer, patients (21.4%) and caregivers (26.7%) most valued the role of genetics in understanding the risk of having aggressive prostate cancer. The effect of lifestyle modifications, such as diet and exercise, on recurrence, survival, and quality of life was ranked just under this statistic (14.6% and 10.1%, respectively).
In those who fell under the recurrence domain, the use of decision-making tools for hormone or radiation therapy was most valued (28.1% for patients, 24.6% for caregivers), followed by quality of life and lifestyle modifications. Quality-of-life metrics were most important to 23.5% of patients and 28.5% of caregivers in the advanced prostate cancer domain.
“Our research team is using these priorities to develop patient-centered, comparative effectiveness research trials that aim to address disparities among Black prostate cancer patients,” the researchers said.
