Blacks, Hispanics, and other minority groups remain underrepresented among neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) students in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), according to a study published in Advances in Neonatal Care.
For this study, Dr. Desi Newberry from the Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina, and Dr. Tracey Bell from Emory University in Atlanta designed a survey to assess racial/ethnic diversity among NNP faculty and students in accredited NNP programs in the United States.
The researchers received responses from 23 out of 41 NNP education programs. The data obtained from 197 NNP faculty revealed that 83% of the population were white, 7.4% Black, 5.6% Asian, 2.8% Latin American, and 0.95% “other” race/ethnicity.
When the researchers looked at the racial/ethnic composition of the NNP students, they found that of 403 NNP students over two years, about 79% were white, 6.5% Black, 5.7% Latin American, 4.5% Asian, 2.0% multi-race/ethnicity, 0.2% Native American, and the remaining 1.7% were of other race.
Sadly, the racial and ethnic composition of the students and faculty are not representative of the racial/ethnic makeup based on the national data on newborns admitted to US NICUs. The researchers found that 18% of newborns admitted to NICUs were Black, compared to 6.5% of NNP students. Similarly, 19.5% of NICU admissions were Latin American, compared to 5.7% of students. The same significant differences were observed between NNP students and NICU admissions. These discrepancies may lead to disparity in neonatal care.
The researchers called for increased representation of Blacks, Hispanics, and minority groups to address disparities in NICU care and outcomes. They also noted the need to identify the barriers and strategies to recruit and retain underrepresented minority nursing students and faculty.
“There is a significant difference between the racial and ethnic backgrounds of NICU registered nurses and NNPs and the neonates they serve,” the authors write. “This racial and ethnic discordance begins in nursing school with a discordance between NNP students and faculty in comparison to the US population.”
