Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provide valuable insights into the subjective experiences of patients with various medical conditions. Conditions like atopic dermatitis (AD) and chronic urticaria (CU) present significant challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring.
While physician evaluations remain fundamental, PROMs are validated and standardized tools that complement physician evaluations and guide treatment decisions. However, despite their potential benefits, there are notable gaps in the integration of PROMs into routine allergology and dermatology practice.
A study in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice explored the global real-world utilization of PROMs for AD and CU in specialized allergology and dermatology clinics and their associated networks. The investigators sought to identify current practices, challenges, and areas for improvement in PROM implementation.
The study surveyed 2534 physicians across 72 specialized allergy and dermatology centers and their local and regional networks in 73 countries. A comprehensive 53-item questionnaire was administered to gauge physicians’ awareness and utilization of PROMs for AD and CU.
Among the surveyed physicians, 1308 demonstrated awareness of PROMs; however, only a minority—14% for AD and 15% for CU—reported regular use in their clinical practice. Furthermore, half of the physicians who utilized PROMs did so infrequently, citing time constraints and patient preferences as significant barriers.
Demographic analysis revealed that physicians who were female, younger, and specialized in dermatology were more likely to use PROMs for AD and CU. The study also identified the most commonly employed PROMs for each condition: Patient-Oriented Scoring Atopic Dermatitis Index for AD and Urticaria Activity Score for CU. The primary drivers for PROM use were monitoring disease control and activity.
“Even though PROMs offer several benefits, their use in routine practice is suboptimal, and physicians perceive barriers to their use,” the investigators summarized. They concluded their study by stating, “It is essential to attain higher levels of PROM implementation in accordance with national and international standards.”
