In a groundbreaking study released at this year’s ASCO Annual Meeting, the prevalence of sexual harassment of oncologists from their peers and patients was surveyed. Three types of harassment were studied: gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion. Both men and women were surveyed.
The results were disquieting, the authors reported. In some instances, up to 80% of women and 56% of men reported receiving some type of harassment. Equally discomfiting was the high incidence of patient harassment experienced by both sexes.
As a result, victims of this type of harassment suffered from decreased mental health, had workplace safety issues, and increased turnover intentions. This study shows a need for greater protection and preventative strategies to protect oncologists of both sexes.
