A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology found that topical microencapsulated benzoyl peroxide improved the skin microbiome and clinical symptoms in patients with rosacea.
Studies have found that imbalances in the bacteria found in the skin, such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Cutibacterium acnes, may lead to the development of rosacea. Specifically, studies have found that increased S. epidermidis abundance and a loss of  C. acnes abundance are associated with rosacea severity.
Dr. Yvonne Nong, a researcher with the Integrative Skin Science and Research and the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Davis, and colleagues, wanted to investigate whether the antimicrobial properties of microencapsulated benzoyl peroxide (E-BPO) – a newly FDA-approved topical treatment for rosacea – make it an effective treatment for the condition.
The researchers included about 31 patients with moderate to severe facial rosacea. The patients were randomly assigned to receive a pea-size amount of 5% E-BPO (n=15), and 16 received a daily vehicle cream that did not contain E-BPO for about 8 weeks. After this period, the researchers switched the participants to the opposite treatment for 4 weeks.
The researchers found that patients who received E-BPO experienced a reduction in the amount of Staphylococcus and an increase in Cutibacterium from the start of the study until week 8. According to the researchers, these levels remained unchanged after the group switched to vehicle cream treatment. 
Although the researchers found that both groups have similar bacteria diversity profiles, they observed that people in their E-BPO group had significantly improved sebum levels and improved inflammation from baseline to week 8. 
“Overall, the bacterial diversity did not significantly change, suggesting that more than diversity alone may be needed to assess the microbiome. Individual changes in species quantity may be more important than overall diversity shifts in rosacea,” Dr. Nong and colleagues wrote. 
Researchers concluded that using E-BPO might help change the types of bacteria on your skin in a good way. This balance of bacteria can help lessen the severity of rosacea.
