Following the Supreme Court&#8217;s Dobbs v. Jackson decision, women are seeking more invasive and longer-lasting contraception even when living in states with continued abortion access, according to a recent presentation at the 25th Annual Fall Scientific Meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA).
The Supreme Court&#8217;s decision in 2022, which led to abortion restrictions in some states, has significantly impacted women&#8217;s reproductive rights nationwide. The impact of Dobbs&#8217;s decision varies based on how a state has decided to permit or restrict abortion access.
Post-Dobbs studies have reported an increase in vasectomy rates, alongside other long-lasting procedures such as tubal ligation. However, there is not enough data about the shifts in contraception access post-Dobbs.
Researchers at a New York institution studied how the Dobbs decision affected contraception and sterilization trends. The study analyzed patient data from both before and after the Dobbs ruling to understand any shifts in contraceptive behaviors and sterilization rates among both men and women.
The researchers defined the pre-Dobbs period as January 2021 to May 2022, while the post-Dobbs period was defined as July 2022 to December 2022.
The findings revealed that there was an increase in longer-acting and permanent contraceptive options between the pre-Dobbs and post-Dobbs periods. The researchers found that the use of intrauterine devices increased from 47%to 48%, and salpingectomy (a surgical procedure in which one or both of the fallopian tubes are removed) increased from 15% to 24%.
The investigators, however, observed that short-acting contraceptives such as Nexplanon and Depo-Provera were used less frequently post-Dobbs than pre-Dobbs. 
In addition, the study revealed that the number of salpingectomies per month increased from a mean of 9.7 pre-Dobbs to 18.3 post-Dobbs—an increase of 88.7%. The number of monthly vasectomies performed increased from a mean of 35.6 pre-Dobbs to 53 post-Dobbs–a growth of 49%.
&#8220;These results indicated increased use of more invasive and longer lasting contraceptive methods following the Dobbs decision even in a state with continued abortion access,&#8221; the researchers wrote.
